Internet Protocol
Cellular Digital Packet Data
supports the Internet Protocol.
The CDPD Network is designed to operate as an extension
of existing data communications networks. This extension is provided through
definition of the CDPD Network as a peer multi-protocol, connectionless
network to existing data infrastructures. Existing connectionless network
protocols, such as the suite of Internet protocols, may be used to access
services through the CDPD Network. Similarly, existing connectionless network
protocols may be used to access services provided by the CDPD Network.
The CDPD Network is also designed to allow higher
layer protocol evolution and to allow introduction of additional application
services to CDPD subscribers. Both goals are achieved by limiting the CDPD
Network services and protocols to the Network Layer (e.g.
IP) and below.
From the mobile subscriber's perspective, the CDPD
Network is simply a wireless mobile extension of traditional networks.
One of the most popular network supported is the Internet. By using a CDPD
Service Provider Network's service, a subscriber is a full participant
in the widely adopted Internet.
In summary, the CDPD Network is a connectionless,
multi-protocol network service providing peer network wireless extension
to the Internet. The CDPD Network provides compatible network support to
existing Internet applications and allows those applications to evolve.
Moreover, the CDPD Network is designed to evolve gracefully through adoption
and provision of future network protocols.
